University of Georgia historian Claudio Saunt to accompany his new book West of the Revolution: An Uncommon History of 1776, offers a time-lapse vision of the transfer of Indian land between 1776 and 1887

Digital project using maps originally created by the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology in 1899. The project documents the dynamics of dis-appropriation of Native lands between 1776 and 1887, as the United States actively engaged in seizing more than 1.5 billion acres from America's indigenous people by treaty and executive order, mapping each such action taking place in this period. It also includes present-day federal Indian reservations.

Native Land Digital is Indigenous-led, with an Indigenous Executive Director and Board of Directors who oversee and direct the organization. Numerous non-Indigenous people also contribute as members of our Advisory Council.

Printable wall-maps

Over the last ten years CEC staff has worked with elders from Bering Sea coastal communities to document Yup'ik place names. Elders have been eager to teach young people their rich history and named places of their homeland, including camp and settlement sites, rivers, sloughs, rocks, ponds, even sandbars and underwater channels. More than 3,000 names have been identified.
