Panopto

Software: Panopto

Features

  • Ability to trim ends of video and middle parts
  • Can integrate short quizzes into your videos
  • When viewed in Panopto viewer, students can take notes online and navigate between timestamps easily
  • Integrates easily with Canvas and built to be optimized
  • Personal Panopto account allows you to easily copy videos between courses
  • Resources and support on using Panopto
  • For student use: Panopto must be enabled by the faculty member before students can use it. Can only use Panopto after faculty have enabled the Assignment Dropbox.
  • Panopto captions are done automatically with approximately 75% accuracy, but need to be manually turned on by the creator. Also allows for upload of captions after recording.
  • Potential downsides: has its bad days 

Hosting

  • Is its own hosting platform, videos recorded in Panopto are automatically uploaded to your Panopto library
  • Can download videos from Panopto into video formats (.mp4, .wav)

Access to Software

  • Part of Canvas

Adobe Premiere Pro

Software: Adobe Premiere Pro

Features

  • Innumerable advanced professional video editing features
  • Guides and tutorials on use from Adobe
  • Downsides: significant learning curve and system is not always intuitive, takes up significant space on your computer

Hosting

  • Is not a hosting platform, requires export to a hosting site
  • Can download videos into most formats (.mp4, .wav) or direct to Youtube/Vimeo

Access to Software

  • Downloadable as part of the Adobe Suite
  • Requires contacting IS to be set up with access to the Adobe Suite to be able to download Adobe Premiere Pro

Powerpoint

Software: Powerpoint

Features

  • Allows for recording screencapture with audio
  • Can add basic video effects, shapes, filters, cropping, trimming the ends, and adjust the volume 
  • Embedded in Powerpoint and interacts well with other powerpoint tools
  • Can create gifs from your exports
  • Learn more about features
  • Potential downsides: Doesn't let you edit in the middle of your recording

Hosting

  • Not a hosting platform, allows for export to host elsewhere
  • Exports to most video formats (.mp4, .wav) as well as Youtube

Access to Software

  • Default application and part of the Office365 suit

iMovie

Software: iMovie

Features

  • Title pages, transitions, sound effects, allows editing of separate video and audio streams, allows mixing of video and still images
  • Includes higher level of editing capacity than most free/included video software
  • Potential downsides: takes longer to learn because there are more features to figure out, not always intuitive

  • Not a hosting platform, allows for export to host elsewhere
  • Exports to Youtube and Vimeo, also exports to most video formats (.mp4, .wav)

  • Default software on Mac computers

Quicktime

Software: Quicktime

Features

  • Very simple and easy to use.
  • Allows for recording just voice, computer camera and audio, or screencast with audio.
  • Ability to trim the ends of your video after recording
  • Potential downsides: Doesn't let you edit in the middle of your recording

  • Not a hosting platform, allows for export to host elsewhere
  • Exports to most video formats (.mp4, .wav)

Screencast-o-matic

Software: Screencast-o-matic

Features

  • Quick, easy to use screen, camera, and audio capture
  • Can trim ends of recording
  • Can add captions
  • Records up to 15 minutes
  • Potential downsides: limited editing features, not a great tool if including any student information since hosting site has unclear privacy

Hosting

  • Is its own hosting platform, videos are uploaded to your Screencast-o-matic library and all you need to do is share the link

Access to Software

TechSmith

Software: TechSmith Capture

Features

  • Quick, easy to use screen, camera, and audio capture
  • Potential downsides: has no editing features, not a great tool if including any student information since hosting site has unclear privacy, not able to include captions

Hosting

  • Is its own hosting platform, videos recorded using TechSmith Capture are uploaded to your TechSmith library and all you need to do is share the link
