Tips for Spotting AI-Generated Content

There is no checker or tool that is 100% reliable when it comes to determining whether text has been generated by AI. However, there are some indicators that can help identify when you're dealing with AI-generated text:

  1. Language structure: While humans tend to vary our language and sentence structure for better flow and cohesion, AI-generated text may be repetitive in structure or use language patterns repeatedly.
  2. Content and citations: Writing that includes citations to articles, books, or websites that don't exist (hallucinations) is likely to be AI-generated. Writing that fails to include citations for sources referenced may also be relying on generated sources. If you're ever unsure about a source, don't hesitate to ask a librarian!
  3. Placeholder text: Some AI tools will use placeholder text if it does not have enough information to fill the gaps itself. The appearance of placeholders like "insert name here" or "Let me know if you'd like any changes!" are indicators that the text was generated.
  4. Buzzwords: Excessive use of jargon or buzzwords, especially if this language isn't used in the classroom, can be indicative of AI-generated text.
