Digital Humanities

A definition of the field and a guide to significant projects, resources, and literature.

What Are Digital Humanities?

Digital humanities is a loosely defined field that encompasses the application of various computer-based tools and methods to traditional humanities disciplines such as History, English, and Philosophy. This may include such projects as interactive historical atlases or timelines, digitized art or document collections, and digital libraries.

In Digital_Humanities (2012), Anne Burdick, Johanna Drucker, Peter Lunenfeld, Todd Presner, and Jeffrey Schnapp offer the following as possible learning outcomes for digital humanities-centered instruction:

  1. Ability to integrate digitally driven research goals, methods, and media with discipline-specific inquiry
  2. Ability to understand, analyze, and use data
  3. Develop critical savvy for assessing sources and data
  4. Ability to use design critically
  5. Ability to work collaboratively
